Local Rowing Lake
I
am the site manager for a large excavation project in Berkshire; my job is to
oversee the extraction of raw gravel material for use in the building industry
using heavy plant machinery. My excavators cost about £ 50,000.00
each. They run on diesel fuel and replacement parts and tyres are costly.
One late Friday afternoon my crew and I were preparing to close the site for the weekend after a hard week at work. I became aware of shouting coming from the entrance to my site and saw, travelling up the lane towards me was a convoy of about twelve vehicles driven by travellers.
The Police were immediately called when one of the vehicles drove straight towards a little old lady in her 70's standing in the gateway to her field. The Police attended and did nothing - something to do with lack of evidence and identifying the offender!
I positioned one of my trucks across the gateway preventing any vehicles from entering my site. I was then confronted with a serious problem; it was 4.30pm on a Friday afternoon, where would I get any form of security at this time of day?
I called a telephone pages company and was given the name of Coverguard Security based in Maidenhead. I called the number given and the phone was answered immediately in a polite and courteous manner. I explained the situation and was told that I was not the only one to experience this. Within 45 minutes of my call I had in front of me six Security Guards in uniform, who, let me tell you, knew what they were doing. As the evening grew on two officers were left on my site and remained there for a few weeks afterwards, as our traveller friends decided to camp in the field next door instead.
